![]() ![]() These level packs are even cross-platform, so you can send your levels to a friend who has the PC version or vice versa. Other improvements include an impressive level editor that allows you to share your creations with any other version of Enigmo via the File Sharing functionality in iTunes. Fat-fingering the wrong item and breaking your wacky Rube Goldberg machine of liquid redirection was always a little irritating, and this seems to be a thing of the past on the iPad. As I already mentioned, I liked the original Enigmo a lot, but levels that required tons of different items to solve almost always involved some frustration with the controls as you’re always zooming in and out to accurately grab and maneuver things around the game world.Īmong the other improvements of the iPad version, having the extra screen real estate to never really need to fiddle with the zoom level too much while always being able to manage the pieces in game has made playing Enigmo a lot less frustrating. The farther you get in to the game the more and more elaborate these puzzles become, until you eventually just get stuck and find yourself hopelessly pouring over Google search results for hints if you’re anything like me. This can mean placing a platform to change the angle the liquid is falling, then placing a bumper to bounce the liquid higher, then placing a sponge to collect the liquid and drip it in to the jar. If this is the first you’ve heard of the Enigmo games, the basic gameplay mechanic involves placing different things in the game world to route liquid from the origin dropper to the jar of the same color. So, it stands to reason that their iPad game, Enigmo Deluxe is also in line with what we’ve seen in the past from Pangea. In other words, Enigmo for the iPhone is great, and its sequel, Enigmo 2 is just as good if not better. ![]() The original Enigmo has won numerous awards including “Best iPhone Game" at Apple’s WWDC in 2008 as well as winning the 2008 Austin GDC Independent Games Festival Showcase. If anything, I can live with the slight touch issues just resolve the crashing and I will have no complaints about this game.Originally released in late 2008, Pangea Software’s Enigmo is about as close as you get to a classic App Store puzzle game, even though it started its life as a Mac and PC game all the way back in 2003. I then have to delete the data because going back into it always crashes the app there after. The big thing that kills the rating that I am giving this app is the mildly frequent crashing that occurs mainly through level transitions, has happened several times during key save moments and corrupted my saved game. This may just something that adds to the challenge which is why it isn’t a huge issue for me. Scrolling through game space can be a little dangerous to cause you can easily offset other items on the playing field if you do not watch were you place your fingers. Also, in rotation of an item its very easy to unselect the item while trying to rotate it. Rotation of items being one them, objects always seem to be playing catch up with your finger and when you think you’ve gotten it right you’ve actually overshot your target. The smaller of the two is the touch mechanics are tad bit too sensitive. However, while functional on the iPhone X with the most recent software the app has developed a few quirks that I don’t remember it having on past devices. I have had this game since owning the original gen 1 iPhone and through the years I always dust it off to play through the levels again. Love this game but still glitchy with new IOS and or iPhone X You may submit your levels to us and we'll include them in the public list if we like them enough. In addition to the 50 levels that come with the game, you can also download many more levels for free! As of version 1.1, you can download levels created by other users or by yourself with the Mac or PC version of Enigmo which has a built-in level editor. The physics in Enigmo are truly amazing to watch! This is one of the most unique puzzle games ever created. The faster you complete each of the 50 levels, the more bonus points you receive. You move and rotate various types of bumpers, sliders, accelerators, and sponges in order to divert the flow of the falling droplets. The performance is stunning and if you hear it on a world-class system you get those obligatory goosebumps, even if you’ve seen the scene dozens of times before. With the demo in Northridge, JBL Synthesis gear easily emulated the effects of motion actuators in the seats by using nothing but sound waves. At Harman headquarters, there was a bit more horsepower behind it than in the CEDIA booth demo, mostly when it comes to the subs. The highlight, no doubt, was the JBL Synthesis SCL architectural speakers demo in the John Eargle theater. However, I got to hear a lot of the new gear that was at the CEDIA show. Knowing that JBL torture tests its gear for durability is interesting but being in that room is no fun. We had to wear hearing protecting and when we stepped into the room, the subs you see in the photo below (image provided by Harman) were pounding like a jackhammer, running at their absolute limit. I also saw, heard, and smelled the chamber where the engineers torture-test the gear, sometimes to the point of failure, which is why there’s a burning voice coil smell in the air. Having never visited Harman before and knowing that CEDIA is usually jam-packed and therefore difficult to get into demos, I took the trip.ĭuring the visit, I got to see the process of developing a horn driver and a speaker cabinet. However, this year prior to CEDIA, Harman reached out to see if I’d be interested in a visit to its Northridge, CA facilities for an in-depth look at how some of its CEDIA offerings were developed and turned into a product, as well as to offer demos that go beyond what you can squeeze out of a trade show. Normally I’d report on the Harman CEDIA show floor demos and static displays and call it a day. Pre-CEDIA Visit to Harman in Northridge, CA It’s a dual 15” passive ported monster that’ll set you back $8,250 and will suck down 5000 W RMS while reaching 15 Hz (-6dB). That’s the JBL Synthesis SSW-1, unveiled back in January 2021. Visitors to the Harman CEDIA booth got to see but sadly did not hear the big guns. This, as has always been the case with the CEDIA Synthesis demos I have attended in years past, is an aural highlight of the show. Which, by the way, is to shake things up on the bass side of things, while creating a bubble of 3D immersive sound that’s crystal clear, cohesive, and enveloping with the mids and highs. ![]() In addition to static displays of speakers, Harman’s booth featured two demo rooms, one of which was dedicated to showing off what an $80,000 Synthesis system can do. Harman came to Dallas loaded for bear, with a broad selection of products ranging from affordable performance architectural speakers, all the way up to a JBL Synthesis super-sub that shakes things up with its massive output. It was great to see familiar faces and to experience new products in person. While CEDIA 2022 wrapped up on October 1, memories from the gathering will live on. The latter made its booth one of the most impressive at CEDIA 2022. Today the company is dominant in live concert and movie theater sound, and it also has a ton of speaker options for custom install applications including its high-end Synthesis lineup. Many neologisms are examples of blends, but many blends have become part of the lexicon. The word is a portmanteau of Massachusetts Governor Elbridge Gerry's name with salamander. The original Gerrymander pictured in an 1812 cartoon. Īn occasional synonym for "portmanteau word" is frankenword, an autological word exemplifying the phenomenon it describes, blending " Frankenstein" and "word". In modern French, a porte-manteau is a clothes valet, a coat-tree or similar article of furniture for hanging up jackets, hats, umbrellas and the like. ![]() According to the OED Online, the etymology of the word is the "officer who carries the mantle of a person in a high position (1507 in Middle French), case or bag for carrying clothing (1547), clothes rack (1640)". According to The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language ( AHD), the etymology of the word is the French porte-manteau, from porter, "to carry", and manteau, "cloak" (from Old French mantel, from Latin mantellum). ![]() According to the OED Online, a portmanteau is a "case or bag for carrying clothing and other belongings when travelling (originally) one of a form suitable for carrying on horseback (now esp.) one in the form of a stiff leather case hinged at the back to open into two equal parts". ![]() In then-contemporary English, a portmanteau was a suitcase that opened into two equal sections. Make up your mind that you will say both words, but leave it unsettled which you will say first … if you have the rarest of gifts, a perfectly balanced mind, you will say "frumious". For instance, take the two words "fuming" and "furious". Humpty Dumpty's theory, of two meanings packed into one word like a portmanteau, seems to me the right explanation for all. In his introduction to his 1876 poem The Hunting of the Snark, Carroll again uses portmanteau when discussing lexical selection: You see it's like a portmanteau-there are two meanings packed up into one word. Humpty Dumpty explains to Alice the practice of combining words in various ways, comparing it to the then-common type of luggage, which opens into two equal parts: Slithy means "slimy and lithe" and mimsy means "miserable and flimsy". The word portmanteau was introduced in this sense by Lewis Carroll in the book Through the Looking-Glass (1871), where Humpty Dumpty explains to Alice the coinage of unusual words used in " Jabberwocky". If it were called a " stish" or a " starsh", it would be a portmanteau. For instance, starfish is a compound, not a portmanteau, of star and fish, as it includes both words in full. A portmanteau also differs from a compound, which does not involve the truncation of parts of the stems of the blended words. Ī portmanteau word is similar to a contraction, but contractions are formed from words that would otherwise appear together in sequence, such as do and not to make don't, whereas a portmanteau is formed by combining two or more existing words that all relate to a single concept. When portmanteaus shorten established compounds, they can be considered clipped compounds. In linguistics, a portmanteau is a single morph that is analyzed as representing two (or more) underlying morphemes. ( May 2020)Ī portmanteau word, or portmanteau ( / p ɔːr t ˈ m æ n t oʊ/ ( listen), / ˌ p ɔːr t m æ n ˈ t oʊ/) is a blend of words in which parts of multiple words are combined into a new word, as in smog, coined by blending smoke and fog, or motel, from motor and hotel.
